The Holiday Table

Olive velvet, gold-rimmed china, cut crystal and candlelight. A dinner table your guests will photograph before they sit down.

A beautiful holiday table is built in layers: a quiet natural tablecloth, one rich velvet runner, then white and gold dinnerware, crystal and as much candlelight as the table will hold. Keep the palette to olive, ivory and gold, and repeat each color at least three times so it looks intentional.

Styling notes

  • Layer the table: a neutral tablecloth first, then a velvet runner down the center.
  • Repeat olive in three places: runner, napkins and greenery.
  • Keep metals to one family; gold flatware, rings and candlesticks together.
  • Mix candle heights: tall tapers in brass, low votives between them.
  • Add white ranunculus or roses with cedar for a fresh, low centerpiece.
